Purim: Dropping the Mask, Being Jewish and Oneself
In some striking and unusual works, Jewish poets, male as well as female, use the figure of Esther to write about dropping disguises and finding their authentic voices amidst danger and hostility. They remind us that this comic celebration for children (of all ages!) occurs in the face of potential genocide.
Against contexts of assimilation and conversion, the poets ask: What does it signify to speak as a Jew, without disguise?
19th and 20th century readings from Rebekah Hyneman, E. Yancey Cohen, Peter Michelson, Karen Gershon, and others.
